Expanding on the author's explanation.

All 16 pawns promoted to bishops. There was a *first* pawn capture from each of the 8 files. There were also 2 additional pawn captures. Cases:

- If the 8 pawn captures were distributed 4+4 between Wh and Bl, then the number of light bishops promoted was even, and must have been 6&6 light so that the two later captures nudged a Wh pawn dark to light, and a Bl pawn light to dark.

- If the 8 pawn captures were distributed 5+3 between Wh and Bl, then the number of light bishops promoted was odd, and must have been 5&5 light so that the two later captures both nudged Wh pawns dark to light.

- If the 8 pawn captures were distributed 3+5 between Wh and Bl, then the number of light bishops promoted was odd, and must have been 7&7 light so that the two later captures both nudged Bl pawns light to dark.

In none of these three cases was a bP nudged from dark to light. Therefore the last move could not have been gxh1=L or gxf1=L, so can't add Bl bishop on h1.

Since both nudges were nonetheless used for pawn captures, we can't add the mating unit on g2,e2,g4,e4 or c6.

There is some choice in the retro path, but in the shortest resolution, the sK round trip is uniquely defined: e8-c8(castling)-b8-c8(switchback)-d7-d8-e8. Note that wTa, still stuck in its cage, was captured on c2.

**Mu-Tsun Tsai**: Can't believe that this one didn't get the 1st prize. The design is really brilliant! (2011-04-17)

**Henrik Juel**: Thanks for your nice words, Mu-Tsun. In 1997 there were few retro problems in Thema Danicum, and they were judged together with fairy problems, so the competition was stiff. (2011-04-17)

**Henrik Juel**: Thanks for posting the solution, Andrew

Two minor points:

The uncheck plusses should be R: 1. ... g7xSf6 2. Sg4-f6+ Kd8-e8 3. Se5-g4 Kd7-d8 4. Sc6-e5+ Kc8-d7 5. Sd8-c6 Kb8-c8 6. d7-d8=S Kc8-b8 7. c6xTd7+

sK could wander around on the queen side while wS pendulates on, say, g4 and h2; but in the shortest resolution the sK round trip is unique (2021-01-17)

**A.Buchanan**: welcome Henrik - also added the famous sLf8 to the animation (2021-01-18)

**Henrik Juel**: Six of the pawn captures happen to be uniquely determined, namely

The locations of 2 knights are determined by retro-considerations. The remainder are uniquely located to permit mate.

All Black pawns promoted. 5 pawn captures are allowable for each side, but White pawns captured an even number of times so could only use 4.

- Black c & f pawns required 1 capture each to promote.

- If White d & e pawns did not cross-capture, then Black d & e pawns captured 3 times. If White d & e pawns did cross-capture, then still Black d & e pawns need 1 pawn capture.

- If White a & b pawns did not cross-capture, then Black a & b pawns needed at least 2 captures. If White a & b pawns did cross-capture, then Black a & b pawns did not need to capture.

- Similarly for g & h files.

This adds up to a total of 9 captures, with any 2 pairs of White pawns cross-capturing.

- If White a & b pawns cross-captured, then [BaP] must have gone to a3 or a4, then [BbP] promotes on b1, then [WaP] captures on b3, and then [BaP] promotes on a1.

- If on the other hand White a & b pawns did not cross-capture, then [WbP] must have gone to b3, [BaP] captures on b2 and promotes on b1, then [WaP] moves to a4 or a5, and [BbP] captures below the white a pawn and promotes on a1.

In either case, BNa1 cannot move because WPb3 is already in place. The same reasoning on the kingside implies that there is BNh1.

Henrik Juel: Add bBd5. Not on e4, g2, or h1, because all captures were made by P's and the 2 extra captures (besides the 8 captures necessary to promote all P's) decreased the number of lightsquared bB's to achieve the square color imbalance of 8 lwB's and 6 lbB's. (2003-10-13)comment
