Ejercicio físico regular como un mecanismo de protección contra la depresión en jóvenes

Resumen

Se investigan los efectos del ejercicio físico sobre cinco medidas relacionadas con la depresión en jóvenes. Universitarios de ambos sexos fueron asignados aleatoriamente a un grupo de entrenamiento físico programado o a un grupo de control. El tratamiento duró 12 semanas, con tres sesiones semanales de una hora de duración cada una. En el grupo de entrenamiento se observó un descenso ¿desde el inicio al final del período¿ únicamente en una medida de vulnerabilidad a la depresión, la insatisfacción (GHQ-I), pero no en las dos medidas de depresión (BDI y GHQ-DS), ni tampoco se observó un incremento en las medidas de satisfacción vital (SWL) y autoeficacia (APG), en comparación con el grupo de control. No obstante, existen indicios de que el ejercicio físico puede actuar como un mecanismo de freno o protección frente al desarrollo de la depresión en las personas más vulnerables o que muestran niveles iniciales más elevados de ésta.
