For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of university students comprised of 501 women and 325 men, aged between 18 and 25 years old. They responded to Goldberg’s General Health questionnaire in the scale version (GHQ-28) and to several stress measurements. Although the effect size was low, significant gender differences were found, as well as differences as a function of level of studies. After controlling the effect of stress, we found that the women had more somatic and anxiety symptomatology and more insomnia than the men, but there were no significant differences in depression symptomatology. Gender is a relevant variable in anxiety and somatization among university students, but the level of studies also affects mental health.
