Abstract

Purpose: To compare the results of the optical pachymetry and the ultrasonographic pachymetry, and to study the influences induced by the anaesthetic drops on the optical pachymetry. Methods: A series of 30 patients (30 eyes) without previous ocular pathology were studied. The equipment used was the ORBSCAN I pachymetry system and the Pocket ultrasonographic pachymetry. The anaesthetic drops used were tetracaine 0.5%. Results: We have found a statistical significant difference (p<0.01) between the mean values obtained with optical pachymetry with and without anaesthetic drops. Differences (p<0.01) were also found between the values measured with the optical pachymetry, with anaesthetic drops and the ultrasonographic one. Conclusions: There exist differences between the two pachymetry systems used. The values obtained from the optical pachymetry being greater, probably because it incorporates the thickness of the tear film in the calculation. The anaesthetic drops create a pachymetry difference, probably due to the induction of epithelial thickness.
