Abstract

The molecules of the acidic polysaccharide produced by the bacterium Bradyrhizobium (Chamaecytisus) BGA-1 were associated when dissolved in water, but not when dissolved in KCl, Ca2Cl or EDTA solutions. We have found no proof of divalent cation-mediated binding of the poly- saccharide molecules. The polymerisation degree of the basic pentasaccharide unit was determined by chromatography in Sephacryl HR400 with lineal dextran molecules used as molecular weight standards. It ranged between 26 to 105 repeating units, being more frequent the molecules made by 43-44 pentasaccharides.
