Abstract
The diversity of nanotechnology available to us, the invisible scale at which they operate, the astonishing range of potential and current applications, the controversies over what constitutes "real" nanotechnological research, the dominant dynamics of the relation between scientific research, technological development and society are factors that do not exactly facilitate an accurate image of nanoscale technologies. To do so would need multiple representations, multiple images of each innovation; this will require a great deal of time to develop. Yet, an adequate social representation of different nanotechnological innovations is essential in order for them to be controlled democratically.
