Résumé

Transverse radiopaque lines (Harris lines) have been interpreted as manifestations of bone growth arrest due to nutritional stress. We performed plain X ray film of the right tibia to 41 adult prehispanic individuals, whose remains are preserved at the Instituto Cabrera Pinto (La Laguna), and compared them with 304 prehispanic individuals from Gran Canaria. These last showed less Harris lines than the population from Tenerife -a result especially striking among women. Women from Tenerife also showed a shorter stature. Besides two incidence peaks, one about 1 year and another around adolescence, affecting both sexes, women also showed an increased incidence ofHarris lines at 3- 8 years age, thus suggesting a worse nutritional status than boys.
