Abstract

Surrogacy is a complex issue, since it involves issues related to justice and equality, autonomy, the supposed free consent, inequalities of social class, gender or even geographic and geopolitical location. Analyzing all the implications that this transnational business can have, the consequences regarding human rights begin to be discussed. To the physical risks derived from the extreme medicalization of the surrogate pregnancy process are added symbolic risks that it entails for women. This article analyzes the main risks associated with surrogate pregnancy, taking into account the logic of the liberal market that promotes it.
