Determinación del contenido de fluoruro en infusiones de yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis)

Résumé

Introduction: the yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) infusions, traditional of the Latin American gastronomy, are more and more frequent in our country. Its beneficial and energizing effects make this infusion is gaining importance. However, infusions can be a source of fluoride. An optimal level of fluoride can protect teeth from decay, but high concentrations of this element can cause toxic effects such as dental and bone fluorosis. Plants such as yerba mate can absorb and accumulate fluoride, being necessary to determine the content of this element in yerba mate infusions. Objectives: to determine the fluoride content in yerba mate samples, from different countries (Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina), to evaluate the contribution to the recommended daily intake (RDI) of fluoride from the consumption of these infusions. Material and Methods: the fluoride content was determined in infusions of 13 different yerba mate brands by potentiometry using a fluoride selective ion electrode. Results: fluoride concentrations are in a range of 0.028 - 0.464 mg/L. The Leaf, coming from Uruguay, is the brand in which the highest concentration of fluoride is registered (0.464 mg/L). Conclusions: the daily consumption of 50 grams of yerba mate supposes an estimated daily intake (IDE) of fluoride for adults of between 0.001 - 0.023 mg/day. These SDI values represent a percentage of contribution to the IDR between 0.05% and 0.29% for men and between 0.07% and 0.39% for women. The results obtained show that the contribution of fluoride does not pose any risk to the health of adult men and women
