Abstract

The present study proposes a bibliographical review of the biological effects caused by the continuos coca leaf chewing (erythroxylon coca and erythroxylon novogranetense) in different andean populations. Within this analysis we consider of great importance to emphasize the cultural aspects of this practice, taking into account for example the artistic representations, the ceramic, and the funerary rituals that make direct or indirect references to coca chewing. To complement this review we present some preliminary results from the studies realized on the human remains from the late period ossuary (1590-1600 B.C) in the site of Chinchero (Cuzco, Perú).
