Abstract

Implementing Integrated Curricular Knowledge and Foreign Language Learning (CLIL) experiencesis especially interesting in light of the creation of the European Higher Education Area and the risein international student mobility. This experience was conducted as part of the third-year Roads (CA)required course for the Degree in Technology in Civil Engineering (GTECIC), with the dual goals ofenhancing students’ technical road knowledge as well as their proficiency in the use of English for pro-fessional purposes. A traditional teaching technique was maintained to achieve this, including lectures,on-the-board problem-solving exercises, and continuous assessment. Everything with the peculiaritythat the lectures were given in English and that the subject’s Virtual Campus offered slides and otherteaching materials in English and Spanish. The primary conclusion is that, clearly, the significant effortthat teaching in English required of the subject’s teaching staff does not produce the anticipated effectsin terms of enhancing technical understanding of roads, though it does so while enhancing professionalEnglish.
