Abstract
This essay explores the sexual and racial metaphors present in A. E. van Vogt's 'Black Destroyer”, discussing the relationship between this brief yet influential tale and the construction of the perverse body in Krafft-Ebing's Psychopatia sexualis. Throughout the process, the close links between the colonial imaginary of racial otherness, particularly Orientalism as conceptualized by Edward Said, and the psychiatrization of perversions in the 19th century will be highlighted. Finally, it presents some variations of thefigure of theforced cohabitation with the perverse body in 20th-century space science fiction.
