Abstract
Evidence suggests that bruxism is a common orofacial manifestation in Parkinson’s disease (PD). This systematic review includes 10 methodologically heterogeneous studies. The findings reveal direct estimates of bruxism in PD of 46% whilst awake and 24.3% during sleep. This condition is associated with orofacial pain, dental wear, temporomandibular disorders and swallowing dysfunction. This phenomenon is contextualised within dopaminergic dysfunction and alterations in the basal ganglia. However, current evidence is predominantly based on observational designs and self-reports. There is a significant lack of objective instrumental assessments, such as polysomnography or electromyography. Bruxism constitutes a significant comorbidity in PD that requires a multidisciplinary approach. Rigorous longitudinal studies are needed to determine its true role as a clinical or prodromal marker.
