Torres Darias

Doctor in Chemistry and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of La Laguna. Member of the Institute of Biomedical Technology of the University of La Laguna (ULL). In addition to the ULL, I have developed teaching and research activities in other Spanish (Complutense de Madrid, Murcia and Granada) and foreign universities (Edinburgh, Vienna Technique, Michigan and National Quilmes, Lotz Technique, Poland, National Slovenian Institute de Química y Central de Venezuela, Venezuela). Specialist in Systems Biology and Metabolic Engineering, I have made contributions in the field of Computational Biology and applied its developments in topics of biotechnological and biomedical interest. As director, since 1995, of the Mathematical Modeling and Systems Biology Research Group and recently, as founder and director of the NEUROSYS group, I have directed numerous research projects of regional and national scope. As a result of this activity, I am the author or co-author of more than 100 international scientific articles, book chapters and a monograph on mathematical modeling and optimization of biosystems (Pathway Analysis and Optimization in Metabolic Engineering. Cambridge University Press, 2002). I have been an evaluator of scientific projects and articles for numerous national and international journals and research agencies (ANEP; FFWF, Austria; NSF, USA; Wellcome Trust, UK; FONCyT and ANPCyT, Argentina, NEST Pathfinder NEST-PATHFINDER, EU, among others). I have held various positions of responsibility in the field of institutional evaluation and promotion of the quality of the university system. Between 2004 and 2007 I was Director of the Canarian Agency for University Quality Assessment and Accreditation and Secretary of the Spanish Network of University Quality Agencies (REACU) in 2006. During this stage I directed several institutional evaluation programs of both centers and university departments as well as scientific research in the Canary Islands. Evaluator of different programs with the different national university evaluation agencies such as ANECA (member of the National Commission for the Accreditation of Professors, Science area); AQU Catalunya (undergraduate and postgraduate evaluator), UNIBASQ (Basque Country) and UCUA. Member of the Council of Experts for External Evaluation of the Quality Agency of the University of Castilla-La Mancha and of UNIBASQ, member of the Technical Unit of the Thematic Project of Institutional Evaluation of the University of La Laguna; coordinator of the Division of Development of Plans of Mathematical, Experimental and Technical Studies of the University of La Laguna; coordinator of the Commission for the Development of the Food Science and Technology Curriculum at the University of La Laguna; Coordinator of Quality and Teaching Innovation of the Faculty of Biology of the University of La Laguna, responsible for the design and implementation of the Quality Assurance System for the Degree in Biology, the promotion of virtual teaching in the Faculty and the preparation of the Degree in Biology. I have been Director of the Academic Organization Secretariat; Secretary of the Doctorate Commission of the University of La Laguna and Coordinator of the Curriculum Commission of the Mathematics, Technique and Experimental Division. Since 2012 I have been dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of La Laguna. Dean of the Faculty of Biology (2010-16), of the Faculty of Sciences (2016-20) and currently Vice-Rector for Teaching Innovation and Quality of the ULL. During the last few years I have published up to 20 articles on education and educational innovation issues.
