Abstract

Research on academic discourse has increased recently due to the fact that successful scientific communication greatly depends on the command that writers have of the appropriate rhetorical practices that characterise the various genres associated to academic settings. This paper explores a number of textual features typical of a particular genre: the abstract. The main focus of attention is the description of the elements that constitute the rhetorical structure of this type of texts. The paper also overviews the main stylistic and presentation recommendations provided by international organizations. This is followed by a discussion on how different languages and disciplines may condition the discursive structure of abstracts.
