Abstract

In the following investigation I present the conclusions of my study related to the architecture of new school buildings in Extremadura from 1931 to 1936. In order to deal with the entire community in its widest vision, several towns, with diverse rates of population, will be taken as paradigms. In this sense, we will obtain both perspectives: a global as well as a particular one that will illustrate the constructive landscape of schools that took place in Extremadura in urban areas and rural ones. An unavoidable requirement is the analysis of both contexts as they characterize this region. The period between 1931 and 1936 is definitely relevant in what concerns the field of education because due to political and social factors, new ways to understand education arouse. At the same time, education is intended to become extensive to all children in Spain regardless of their origins and social status. As a result, there is a big amount of children to be given education and therefore a programme of schools construction is developed. In this research I will analyse the features of the projects and buildings of schools approved or build during this period in order to discover whether their designs were according to the criteria established by the new education requirements.
