Abstract

Abstract The Civil War in Tenerife (1936-1939), presented in the University of La Laguna, in December 2015, by doctoral candidate Ramiro Garcia Rivas, under the supervision of Miguel Ángel Cabrera Acosta , Professor of Contemporary History of the aforementioned University, is summarized as follows: The main objective of the research is crystal clear in the title itself and it's no other than to advance the research on the events taking place in the period of the civil war on the island of Tenerife. Therefore, the object of study is indeed Tenerife at war (the first modern civil war between Canary islanders) , dealing with the the vicissitudes and actions of both Rebel army and the victorious Franco authorities and those of his Republican and antifascist defeated opponents at an active rear from the beginning within Franco side. The war in Spain and its impact on the island are presented throughout the seven sections in which this work has been divided. A study of causes and consequences is completed by conclusions, ordered chronologically and thematically, establishing a periodization division into the phases and the stages studied An analysis is provided in the introductory preamble where the many, various and important sources used are mentioned , taken from different files and institutions newspapers, bibliographic sources, position papers ,various reports and, to a lesser extent, oral sources , providing an important set of first quality documentation , largely unpublished. The work consists of seven parts which are distributed along the 2,802 pages in chronological order, but each is divided into several thematic subsections (economics, society, politics, repression, etc), always starting, (except in the first and last part) from views of the progress of the war on the battlefronts, participation of people from Tenerife in them, the military situation and the war effort made by the people from Tenerife in the rearguard. In the first part a chapter, the first one, is introduced. It deals with the demographic, economical, social and political situation of the island territory, and also with its major corporations and social groups in the Republican era up to the Popular Front, laying the foundation and background of the conflict on the island. Finally, the seventh section serves as a conclusion and also it comes out with the balance of the Civil War in Tenerife and its consequences in the fields of economics, society, politics and repression, along with sources and bibliography used for the realization of this work.
