Abstract

Byrne (1984) conceptualized the self-concept as a multidimensional construct that has a general factor and some specifics, one of which is academic self-concept. The academic self-concept is the image that the person formed about itself from academic performance and capabilities that determine it, important aspects for student, which are also relevant for his context. In educational research, it has shown that is not the general self-concept, but academic self-concept, the variable that has a major influence on academic performance in Secondary Education. The aim of this research was to analyze the academic self-concept’s evolution in students of Secondary Education. For that, we use a sample of 379 students from 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade of Secondary Education from Tenerife. Students were evaluated with scale What do you think about yourself (Brookover, Erickson and Joiner, 1967). Results of this research support those found in other studies that confirm that academic self-concept develops according as student body passes course in Secondary Education.
