Resumen

En este artículo revisamos, desde el momento en que surge este ámbito de investigación hasta la actualidad, los múltiples términos que se utilizan para referirse al pensamiento del profesor. Analizamos sus fundamentos teóricos y su evolución, comentamos sus diferencias y similitudes, examinamos las aportaciones más relevantes de los distintos autores (tanto anglosajones como iberoamericanos) y reflexionamos sobre sus ventajas y limitaciones. Por otra parte, revisamos 192 trabajos empíricos a fin de detectar los conceptos más utilizados. Con todo ello pretendemos clarificar este ámbito de investigación que en la actualidad se presenta confuso, tanto desde el punto de vista epistemológico como conceptual.
