This research analysed whether the contribution of speech perception to word reading is direct or whether speech perception influences word reading indirectly through phonemic awareness, in poor and normal readers proceeding from three grades (3º, 4º y 5º) of primary school. The results showed that speech perception makes a direct contribution to reading in the group of poor readers, but there were no significant correlations among the studied variables in the subjects with normal reading achievement. Furthermore, the results demonstrated a relationship between speech perception and phonemic awareness in the poor readers. Given these results, it is suggested that speech perception, although related to phonemic awareness, does make an independent contribution in explaining learning disabilities in reading
