Resum

Purpose: To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of patients with benign and malignant lesions of eyelid and conjunctiva in our area. Methods: We present a retrospective review of clinical histories of patients with malignant lesions of eyelid and conjunctiva that were biopsied and analyzed in La Candelaria University Hospital between March 1975 and August 2008. We studied the relative frequency of these lesions, age of the patients, gender, and their histopathological diagnosis. Results: We identified 628 patients in our Service data base with histopathological study of the biopsied lesions. Five hundred and seven biopsies (80,7%) came from eyelid lesions, and 121 (19.3%) from conjunctival lesions. Three hundred and sixty-nine (72.49%) from eyelid lesions and 110 (91%) of the conjunctival lesions were benign, and the most frequent lesion was the melanocytic nevus in both locations. Conclusions: Approximately 72.49% of eyelid lesions and 91% of conjunctival lesions are benign. All lesions must be studied because sometimes the clinical and the histopathological diagnosis do not match.
