Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of theory development in Realist Social Theory. The main resource used is the theoretical work of Margaret S. Archer -and his famous work Social Origins of Educational Systems-, which has worked in the explanation and analysis of the origin and change of national education systems in different European countries. On the other hand, some recent analyzes of educational change that combine historical inquiry with sociological theory have begun to move in this direction. These indicate the importance of studying the different social actors have been involved in the processes of educational change. Aspect would include seeing the unsettling relationship between agency and structure and also the origin of the different educational structures and how these have been the result of constant interaction between multiple actors: church, political groups, the state... A brief formulation of this theory will be shown here through the example of the Spanish liberal education system.
