Abstract

We present a study on the operations of addition and subtraction, conducted with students with Down syndrome. We interviewed a group of students with Down syndrome who additive problems, using specific materials and paper and pencil, to investigate their knowledge about the meanings of the operations, strategies and procedures that apply, and the relationship between they reveal the difficulties and cognitive characteristics. The results show that students with Down syndrome use the same strategies and procedures as students without any disabilities, though none of the subjects operated on a completely abstract level. The use of fingers or concrete representations (balls) appears as a fundamental process among these students.
