Résumé

Freedom of information is a core right in democratic societies. Unfortunately journalists and media sometimes behave unethically due to abusive interpretation of that right. Media self-regulation include the different tools that professionals have devoted to themselves to adjust their behaviors to deontological rules. However, this solution does not arouse unanimous support and receives many critics from those who think that self-regulation goes too far and can restrict the freedom of journalists and from those who, on the contrary, think that it falls short and demands coercive measures from the State. This paper explores the concept of self-regulation, giving special attention to press councils, and analyzes the pertinence of critics directed to this sort of regulation of journalism.
