Abstract

In the group Teaching methodologies and ICT (MEDTIC) we are working on the development of interactive timelines aimed at facilitating the teaching/learning process in the subjects ‘Communicative skills in English for the Arts”, “Photography”, “Photography and video” and “Design and the web”, belonging to the degree in Fine Arts, and in “Communicative skills in English for Design”, within the degree in Design. Taking a multidisciplinary approach based on the collaboration among teachers from different areas, this project has a twofold objective. In the first place, we have identified contents amenable to be presented to the students by means of timelines, and we have generated the corresponding interactive digital materials using the free tool Timeline JS, offered by Knightlab. Secondly, we have also asked the students to use that tool themselves to create this kind of resource in a collaborative manner. In both cases we have analyzed, through surveys and objective tests, the motivational capacity and the efficacy of the timelines employed in the project, obtaining overall positive results. These interactive resources, being modular and based on web technology, are apt to be viewed through a smartphone and are wholly compatible with our virtual classrooms. Moreover, they can be integrated within other digital materials that we have previously created (such as a bilingual Photography glossary for mobile devices) or that we could create in the future. This is a good way of sharing open resources reusable in different contexts and, furthermore, the methodology employed is easily transferable to other subjects.
