Abstract
The paper analyzes the current state of Plaza del Principe de Asturias, in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as a people gathering and interrelation public space where, therefore, a diversity of users and activities are possible to find. Fieldwork, through qualitative methodology, is carried out to test its social and functional heterogeneity; the study comprises its morphological characteristics, citizens frequency of use, as well as the users’ profile and appropriations. The objective is, on the one hand, evaluating its conditions as a friendly place, to say, for promoting social cohesion and life quality of residents in the surrounding area; on the other, to assess from an applied view, the methodology used as UTIL tool to identify strength and weakness of open public spaces; suggestions for im-proving its planning, design and management are drawn as a result.
