Abstract
The identity and history of nationality is a fundamental element in the historical development of peoples and societies, but has not always been addressed in the school. The sense of national identity is projected through both educational systems and the processes of schooling and other forms of informal education. In the case of Spain, the historic regions like Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country have joined their specificities to schooling, however, the Canary Islands have been delayed in activating its identity in school. The spoken language has been decisive for the recognition of nationality, which is related to education and the reality of the Canary Islands in the absence of vernacular. The lack of identity and history of nationality is an example of centralist policy, evidence of which is derived from the lack of a Canarian. Only action and some isolated initiatives have boosted its presence in the school curriculum, but has not been a reality until the restoration of democracy and the establishment of autonomy.
