Abstract
News reports in the press have a typical schematic ordering and may be analyzed by a conventional news schema. Such a shema is an example of textual superstructures (van Dijk, 1986). From the analyis of British national newspapers, which are often described as either “qualities” or “tabloids”, we may infer that news in the tabloid press and in the socalled quality press seems to be arranged in rather different ways. This paper illustrates the theoretical framework sketched above. Its aim is two fold. Firstly, to examine how the hypothetical structure of a news schema is actualized in different British national newspapers. Secondly, to show that some news report, particularly those in the tabloid press, can be framed to represent events, in their chronological order, following a narrative schema.
