Abstract

Music teaching in the Canary Islands began thanks to religion. The first source of formation can be found in Las Palmas cathedral. Later on other institutions appear, like academies of laymen, the economic union of Tenerife, the philharmonic union and the conservatory of music. These institutions made music active as an artistic expression and will serve as a substitute for apprenticeship in artistic groups, such as choirs, corals, etc. This kind of moderate music teaching was also a cause for music expansion in the Canary Islands.
