Abstract

This study is based on the sequence criteria defined by Trankell (1972). We have considered lies inside a dynamic process of communication, in which the liar is enabled to repeat the lie. Our hypothesis was that there would be significant differences between the true statements and the false ones, as a result of the repetition throughout a sequence of statements. The sample was composed of 32 students. A factorial design 2 (type of statement: true/false) x 3 (repetition: first/second/third statement) was used. Participants watched the film of the incident. Later, they gave their version (true or false) of the event and they were enabled to repeat their version throughout a sequence of three statements. The results showed how the developmental pattern of statements throughout a sequence are significantly different, depending on whether the witness is lying or telling the truth
