Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the influence of induced affect over racial prejudice. Photographs were presented to activate the stereotype of «black» & «white» racial categories. After that, the influence of this activation is observed on a word-meaning task, in several affective contexts. 38 students participated in a 2 x 2 x 3 factorial design, with two within-subject independent variables (priming: black vs. white people photo, and Type of word: positive vs. negative) and one between-subjects independent variable (affective context: positive vs. negative vs. neutral). The dependent variable was the reaction time to every association priming (photo)-word. Results show an effect of priming on subjects reaction time: black people photo/negative word is associated faster than black people photo/positive word. On the other hand, subjects in a negative affective state, express higher level of prejudice than the other experimental groups. Finally, these results are discussed according to the associative model (Bower, 1981).
