Resumo

In his Fracasos de la fortuna Miguel de Learte Ladrón de Zegama (1732-1785) provides a full account of his own life, from his childhood in Navarre and his adventures in Seville, Cádiz and Tenerife, to his long American experience, which lasted thirty five years. Learte tells us his life, rich of incidents, hard and full of ups and downs, but he also takes the reader to the middle decades of the 18th century in Spain, the Canaries and, in a particular way, in the Spanish colonies. Of a special interest are the two chapters in which he deals with his stay in Tenerife, on his way to America.
