Resumen

The following pages are the result of our continuous reflections about the medieval texts in Arabic and the analises that are frequently subjected to. Althoug no pretension of originality furthers our approach, we intend to look at these already studied pieces from a different perspective and to establish a »new order». Consequently, we have chosen as the object of the present research Al-ŷāhiz’s Kitāb al-H ayawān (Book of the Animals), as text every scholar is well acquainted with. We propose to analyze the generic and contextual foundations of this work as the mainstays supporting the erection of the book to the category of an Islamic Arabic Encyclopedia.
