Abstract

Business environment is not an objective and concrete entity waiting to be discovered(Weick, 1979). Business environment is a consequence and product of perceptions of indivi-duals striving to identify key opportunities and threats likely to impact their organization.Bearing this in mind, we present a tool for environmental scanning that will allow us to identify types of existing environments based on perceived uncertainty. Results show that there is not an only external company reality. On the contrary, this reality is the result of the aggre-gation of the different perceptions of variables making it. Like wise, it was found that the same objective environment is perceived differently in each business area. This has implications for the organization strategic design and the decision making.
