Zusammenfassung

This study examines the most common sources of stress in women battered by their partners. The sample was composed of 364 women between 16 and 74 years old (mean = 38.1. SD = 10.6) contacted through different Women’s Assistance and Information Centres in the Canary Islands. There was considerable diversity in terms of the number of children, educational level, occupation and marital status of the women in the sample. The most common sources of stress mentioned were family problems (59.3%) and child-related problems were the 46.2%. Other sources of stress mentioned by the women were partner relationships (44.8%), economic problems (38.2%), emotional problems (36.3%), work-related issues (32.4%) and housing problem (20.1%). Also mentioned were physical or psychological health problems (18.4%) and the health problems of children and other family members (14.8%). Legal problems were mentioned by 7% and the most uncommon source of stress was social problems, mentioned by 6% of the women.
