Abstract

This article seeks to provide a critical introduction to Hayden White's contribution to the theory of historical knowledge. The first part oudines those elements which may be considered most genuine and significant, with the aim of gauging how and to what extent they should compel us to reconsider the epistemological bases on which historical research has rested up until now. The second part includes a critical analysis of White's epistemological theory, followed by the conclusion that, in the light of the most recent historiographical debates, it would appear to require revision and updating in some of its postulates.
