Variación genética de los Lotus L. (Fabaceae: Loteae) de pinar en Gran Canaria.

Abstract

We used molecular data from 17 isozyme loci in 14 populations representing four taxonomically problematic Gran Canarian pine forest endemic Lotus (L. genistoides, L. holosericeus, L. spartioides, and some populations of ambiguous taxonomic ascription, designed as Lotus sp.) to understand their systematic relationships through their levels of genetic variation. The basic indicators of polymorphism show overall high values of variation that have probably been maintained through a predominance of inbreeding for reproduction in a context of environmental stability and abundant gene flow. Consistently, we detected a considerable inter-population genetic homogeneity as measured by Fst and Gst. Even though a substantial increase in the values of Gst occurred when taxa were grouped in pair-wise combinations (suggesting an incipient reproductive isolation), the low genetic distances reveal a tight relationship that falls within the range expected for co-specific populations. These data may have important taxonomic implications when ongoing morphological studies are completed
