Abstract
The stories written by European male and female travellers during their stay in the Canary Islands, mainly during the XVIIIth and the XIXth centuries, are an essential tool for the study of womenÊs life in those centuries. Wether in groups or on their own, men and women arrived in the islands for a variety of reasons. Some visited the islands on holidays or due to their health, others came because of their job or to do some research/ This trip to the past is accomplished by people subject to the cultural stereotypes of their period, travellers who would judge the characteristics and peculiarities of the Canarian society in their perspective.
