Résumé

The present study examines the psychological impact and the relevance to health of sociodemographic factors in women abused by their partners. The sample was composed of 86 women (mean age = 40.44; SD = 10.3 and range 19-67) contacted through different Women’s Assistance and Information Centers in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. 46.5% of the women had a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder and most of the women had long lasting symptoms of anxiety and insomnia, somatic symptoms and depression. 85% of the women also reported helplessness. Post-traumatic stress disorder was predicted by insecurity, an emotional style of coping with abuse, the severity of psychological abuse and low selfesteem
