Abstract
The rise of feminism has effected a restructuring of our theoretical and historical tradition. In the field of art history, feminist intervention has set out to explain the absence of women in artistic creation by offering as evidence the ingrained sexism of the discipline and revealing the incomplete points of view that have previously been presented as universal by dominant discussions of art history. In this work, feminist criticism has cast doubt upon the hierarchy of values on which traditional artistic discussion is based, radically deconstructing the theoretical and methodological bases on which art history is founded. Beginning with a Guerilla Girls poster that satirically enumerates the thirteen advantages of being a woman artist, this article analyses some of the themes that centre upon the relationships between feminist thought and art history.
