Abstract

This paper focuses on the relationship between social class, gender and inequality of educational opportunities (IEO), based on data collected from the Survey on Labour Force over several years (1977-2004). During that period, the IEO is more or less constant for males, but it decreases in the case of females. This finding is difficult to explain by means of educational policies given that the comprehensive reform in Spain (LGE and LOGSE) doesn¿t affect the IEO.When grants decrease in the 90¿s, the IEO falls slightly for men and radically for women; meanwhile, the public expenditure on education per student has increased over that period. The Rational Action Theory and the Social Reproduction Theory are used in an attempt to explain these findings. The final conclusion is that the Rational Choice Theory fits better the empirical evidence available at present.
