Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of radiotherapy in Graves-Basedow disease. Material and methods: We studied 18 eyes of 10 patients whose retrobulbar region was irradiated with a megavolt machine of 4-6 MV, using 2 parallel and opposed fields. A total dose of 20 Gy was given in 10 fractions. Follow up period was 5 years. Results: 80% of patients treated had a good response to radiotherapy. Its beneficial effects were seen at the 2nd or 3rd month after treatment, with a progressive reduction in their proptosis and restrictive myopathy. No surgical orbital decompression was needed. Conclusion: Radiotherapy is an effective treatment for Graves disease¿s orbitopathy, with no significant adverse effects.
