Abstract

Social norms have been shown to influence intergroup relations by mediating the explicit expression of prejudice towards outgroups, so that people are allowed to derogate others. Specifically, one aim of this study was to explore the social norms related to the explicit expression of prejudice towards different social groups. Furthermore, we investigated whether social norms are predicted by the control people have over belonging to and the probability of becoming a member of these groups. Lastly, we studied the possibility of establishing a typology of different social groups by computing these two variables. As predicted, results show that, first, social norms vary depending on social groups; second, social norm is predicted by the two variables proposed, and third, a typology of social groups was generated taking into account only these two variables.
