Resum

introduction Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major health problem in developed and developing countries. Diabetes and obesity are well established risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Many studies have shown the relationship between cardiovascular disease CHD and socioeconomic status (SES). In the Canary Islands, the incidence of complications from diabetes is four times higher than in the rest of Spain. aim The aim of this study is to examine trends in socioeconomic inequalities in obesity and diabetes using income to indicate socioeconomic status. Methods This is a cross - sectional study using data from the Health Survey in the Canary Islands 2004. Diabetes is defined as non-fasting blood glucose equal or greater than 140 mg/dl or those with a previous history of diagnosed diabetes. Obesity is defined by a Body Mass Index higher than 30 (25-30 overweight, 30-40 obesity). Socioeconomic status will be measured by income. results Results show that as lower income attainment, higher incidence of obesity and diabetes. There is a direct relationship among these indicators. Conclusions The lower socioeconomic group needs specific strategies to reduce health (HI) inequalities. We need to develop health programmes to closing the gap into HI in these two CVD risk factors, obesity and diabetes.
