Abstract

In this paper, we pursued a first approach to the study of the astronomical practices of the pre-hispanic inhabitants of the islands. Specifically, we have tried to study the calendar which was in use at Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the islands where the available information is most abundant. With this objective in mind, we will make use of both the anthropological sources and the purely archaeological records (so-called ethnoastronomical and archaeastronomical evidences). Section 1 offers an introduction. Sections 2 and 3 are devoted to the study of these ethnographic and purely archaeological evidences, respectively. In section 4, a discussion of all the available information is presented, together with our conclusions.
