Abstract
Debates on ethnocentrism have intensified in recent times fuelled by the so called crisis of modernity and the increasing movement of resistance to Westernization that accompanies it. The disenchantment of the modern worldview has made clearer that by applying their theoretical concepts social scientists, including historians, have produced distorted images, interpretations and explanations of non-Western societies that need to be reexamined. Moreover, since such a crisis entails a rethinking of the notion of theory as representation, it forces us to engage critically not only with the effects of cultural ethnocentrism, but also with those of theoretical ethnocentrism.
