Resumo
This article deals with a critical overview of sociolinguistic variable sex or gender. To begin the discussion, the conceptual bases of both terms are analyzed as well as its relation to other social categories. The classic view of this variable as a dichotomy of the opposite concepts of dominance and difference is revised in order to show the highly impressionistic tenants of this approach, which has barely contributed to shed light on the real infl uence of this variable in sociolinguistic behavior. Empirically, the sex or gender variable may profitably be studied within the frame of a couple of analytical concepts from recent theoretical development in sociolinguistics and anthropology, namely, the notions of interaction and community of practice, which can give a more adequate account of how this variable may act as a relevant determinant in sociolinguistic behavior
