Abstract

«The lithic production from “Abric del Pastor” ( Alcoy, Alicante). An example of Mousterian variability». We present a technological study of the lithic assemblage from Abric del Pastor (Alcoy, Alicante) excavated by M. Brotons (1952 and 1953). Our data is relevant for the debate on Mousterian variability, as it touches on the cognitive and techno-economic behavior of the Neanderthal groups that lived in the Alicante mountain valleys. The results show a coexistence of several flaking systems involving locally available flint, tool recycling and core exhaustion. All of this suggests an exhaustive exploitation of lithic resources, which emerges as a defining feature of the technological practices of these Neanderthal groups.
