Résumé

In this paper the disease named «modorra» (drowsiness) has been studied by means of the data obtained by the historic epidemiology and comparative pathology mainly. e analysis of these data implies that the modorra was not a disease which only affected to the Canary Islands but it existed before in Europe. Moreover, though it was carried by the Spaniards to the Canary Islands and probably to America, it would be possible that the modorra was already present in America. It was an atlantic disease, which should be included into the group of encephalitis. Finally, it should be pointed out that the Canary Islands played an important role in the transmission of this disease because they were its reservoir.
