Abstract

Three lithological units have been distinguished in the volcanic succession of the Basal Complex of Fuerteventura Island, from bottom to top: the Submarine Volcanic Croup, the Transitional Volcanic Croup and the Subaerial Volcanic Croup. These units record the submarine growth and the emersion of the Island. During these stages the volcanism is represented by an ultraalkaline and a strongly alkaline igneous series. The igneous activity was due to the presence of an anomalous zone in the sublithospheric mantle and influenced by the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the northwestern part of the African plate
